How BYD’s Warranty Compares

Kia7 years / 150,000 km7 years / 150,000 km

Volkswagen3 years / unlimited8 years / 160,000 km
BMW3 years / unlimited8 years / 100,000 miles

BYD’s 6-year vehicle warranty is among the best in the market. Only Kia offers longer standard cover (7 years). Tesla’s 4-year/50,000-mile cover is notably short by comparison.

Vehicle Warranty: What’s Covered

The 6-year vehicle warranty covers manufacturing defects and failures in:

  • Mechanical components (excluding normal wear)
  • Electrical systems
  • Infotainment hardware
  • Heating and air conditioning systems
  • Structural components (excluding accident damage)

What is NOT typically covered:

  • Normal wear items: brake pads, tyres, wiper blades, cabin air filters
  • Accident or collision damage
  • Cosmetic damage from normal use
  • Damage from unauthorised modifications
  • Consumables: brake fluid, screen wash, etc.

Battery Warranty: The Details

The 8-year/150,000 km battery warranty guarantees that your battery will retain at least 70% of its original capacity within the warranty period.

What this means in practice:

  • If your Seal was delivered with 354 miles of WLTP range, the warranty guarantees at least 248 miles of WLTP range at 8 years (70% of 354)
  • In real-world terms, with LFP battery chemistry, most owners will see far less degradation than this threshold

What triggers a warranty claim: Battery capacity falling below 70% of original spec within 8 years or 150,000 km is a valid warranty claim. BYD must repair or replace the battery.

What the battery warranty does NOT cover:

  • Damage from improper charging (non-CCS charging equipment)
  • Physical damage to the battery pack
  • Use in commercial or fleet applications beyond the stated terms (check your specific contract)

Drivetrain Warranty

The electric drivetrain warranty covers:

  • Electric motor(s)
  • Inverter/power electronics
  • Reduction gearbox
  • High-voltage cables and connectors

This is separate from the vehicle warranty and runs for 8 years/150,000 km, matching the battery warranty.

Paintwork and Corrosion

  • 3-year paint warranty: Covers defects in paint application (peeling, bubbling not caused by damage)
  • 8-year corrosion warranty: Covers structural rust-through (perforation corrosion)

Both are standard across the industry and in line with what other manufacturers offer.

Servicing and Warranty Validity

To keep the BYD warranty valid, you must service the vehicle according to BYD’s schedule at an authorised BYD dealer or service centre.

BYD EV service intervals: Typically annual or every 25,000 km (whichever comes first). EVs require less servicing than petrol cars — no oil changes, fewer brake changes due to regenerative braking.

BYD DM-i service intervals: More frequent than EVs due to the petrol engine — follow BYD’s schedule for hybrid servicing.

Using a non-authorised garage does not automatically void your warranty under UK consumer law, but you should keep records of all servicing if work is done outside the BYD network.

Warranty Transfers on Second-Hand Purchase

BYD’s warranty is transferable to subsequent owners within the warranty period. This is an important advantage when buying a used BYD — the remaining warranty transfers automatically.

For used BYD purchases:

  1. Verify the registration date to calculate remaining warranty
  2. Request the service history to ensure the warranty is maintained
  3. Confirm with BYD UK that the warranty is registered and in good standing

Roadside Assistance

BYD UK vehicles include roadside assistance as part of the warranty package. Coverage duration and terms may vary — confirm with your dealer at purchase.

Making a Warranty Claim

  1. Contact your nearest authorised BYD dealer or service centre
  2. Describe the fault with as much detail as possible
  3. The dealer will diagnose the issue and liaise with BYD if required
  4. Warranty repairs are carried out at no cost to you

Tips:

  • Report issues as soon as they arise — don’t wait until warranty expiry
  • Keep documentation of any reported issues in case of disputes
  • Know your rights under UK consumer law (Consumer Rights Act 2015), which provides additional protection beyond the manufacturer warranty

Summary

BYD’s warranty package is genuinely competitive — the 6-year vehicle warranty and 8-year battery/drivetrain warranty put it ahead of Tesla, Volkswagen, BMW, and most mainstream brands. Only Kia (7-year) and Toyota (10-year battery) offer longer cover.

For buyers concerned about the relative newness of BYD in the UK market, the strong warranty terms provide meaningful financial protection during the ownership period.
