Brazil: BYD’s Biggest Market Outside China
Brazil isn’t just another export market — it’s BYD’s largest overseas market by a wide margin (~113,000 vehicles in 2025, with over 89,000 shipped in Q1 2026 alone). In April 2026, BYD topped Brazil’s overall new-car brand ranking — the first Chinese brand ever to do so, ahead of Volkswagen, Fiat and GM on their home turf.
Two things drove this: hybrid-friendly products that fit Brazilian fuel economics, and local production.
The Camaçari Factory
BYD’s plant in Camaçari, Bahia — a former Ford site — began producing vehicles in 2025–2026 and anchors the brand’s Brazilian operation. Local assembly matters to buyers because it:
- Softens the impact of Brazil’s rising EV import tariffs (which climb progressively to 35%)
- Shortens parts supply lines (the parts-delay problem is real in new BYD markets)
- Signals BYD is in Brazil permanently, which supports resale values

What’s Different About Brazilian BYDs
- Names: Brazil keeps more Chinese-lineage names than Europe — the King is China’s Qin Plus DM-i, the Dolphin Mini is the Seagull (Europe’s Dolphin Surf), and Song Pro/Song Plus keep their Dynasty names. Cross-reference in our China vs export names guide.
- Hybrid-heavy mix: DM-i hybrids (King, Song family, Shark) suit Brazil’s long distances and patchy fast-charging outside metro areas — and they can run on Brazil’s ethanol-priced fuel economics while commuting on electricity.
- Flex-fuel engineering: BYD has developed flex-fuel (ethanol-capable) hybrid technology specifically for Brazil — a genuinely Brazil-first engineering program.
Charging in Brazil
- Home charging on 220V is the default and covers most Dolphin Mini/Dolphin use cases
- Public DC fast charging is concentrated in the São Paulo–Rio–Belo Horizonte triangle and major capitals; the interior remains sparse — one reason hybrids outsell EVs outside metro areas
- Shopping-centre AC charging is widespread in major cities and often free
Warranty and Ownership
BYD Brazil offers a 6-year vehicle / 8-year battery warranty structure on most models (check per-model terms). The dealer network has expanded past 150 points and continues to grow with the factory ramp — but as everywhere BYD grows fast, service capacity lags sales in some cities. Our escalation playbook applies in Brazil too.
Should You Buy One?
The Dolphin Mini under R$110k remains Brazil’s EV gateway drug — nothing matches it per real. The King and Song Pro are the rational family picks (hybrid economics without charging dependence), and the Shark took a real bite of the Hilux/Ranger market. The main caution is the same one we give every market: BYD’s sales grew faster than its service network, so choose a city with an established dealer and log every service interaction.
