BYD owners raise two tyre issues repeatedly: fast wear (especially front tyres on the powerful models) and road noise (the factory-fitted tyres on early cars weren’t chosen for quietness). Both are fixable, and neither means anything is wrong with the car itself.
Why EVs Eat Tyres — and Where BYD Sits
Every EV wears tyres faster than an equivalent petrol car: 300–600 kg of extra battery weight, instant torque at every traffic light, and regenerative braking loads all act on the rubber. Expect roughly 20–30% faster wear than you’re used to, on any brand.
BYD-specific factors:
- Front-driven power: Atto 3, Dolphin and single-motor Seals put strong torque through the front axle; brisk drivers can scrub front tyres by 20–25,000 km. Rear-drive Seals spread the load better.
- Factory tyre choice: early exports shipped on hard-wearing but average-grip, average-noise OEM tyres (often local-market budget-premium brands). They’re not bad — but replacements can be meaningfully better.
- Camber/toe out of spec: a batch of early cars left factories with alignment at the edge of tolerance. Inner-edge wear = alignment, not driving style. This is the one to catch early.
The Checklist Before You Blame the Car
- Check pressures monthly against the door-sticker figure. EV pressures run higher than habit suggests; underinflation on a heavy EV destroys shoulders fast and adds noise.
- Get a four-wheel alignment (~£50–90 / A$80–150) at the first sign of uneven wear, and after any big pothole. If inner-edge wear appears in the first year, raise it with the dealer as a warranty/goodwill alignment.
- Rotate front-to-rear every 10,000 km — on front-drive BYDs this meaningfully extends set life and keeps noise even.
- Moderate the launches. Eco mode and gentler throttle mapping visibly extend front tyre life on the FWD cars.
Road Noise: What Actually Works
Tyre roar is the dominant noise in an EV because there’s no engine masking it. In order of effectiveness:
- Replace with an EV-focused quiet tyre when the factory set wears out — this is the big one; owners routinely report a transformed motorway experience. Look for tyres with foam-lined “noise reduction” tech and EV load ratings.
- Check wear pattern first — a heel-toe worn or feathered tyre howls; alignment + rotation may fix noise without new rubber.
- Slightly narrower/higher-profile options (where the handbook permits) run quieter than stretched low-profiles.
- Aftermarket door-seal and wheel-arch sound-deadening kits exist, but decent tyres beat them per pound spent.
Recommended Replacement Directions

Fitting a premium EV tyre typically costs 10–20% more than the OEM equivalent and pays it back in wear life, quietness and 2–4% range.
Don’t mix constructions across an axle, and keep the load index at or above the original — BYDs are heavy cars and the load rating is not optional.
When It’s a Warranty Conversation
- Inner-edge wear inside the first year → alignment check on BYD’s account
- Vibration or humming that speed-varies after new tyres and balancing → ask the dealer to check wheel bearings and driveshafts rather than blaming tyres again
