BYD in Europe: The Overview
BYD began selling passenger vehicles in Europe in 2022. By 2025, it is one of the fastest-growing EV brands on the continent. Models vary by market — Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Sweden have the strongest BYD presence.

EU Tariffs on Chinese EVs
In 2024, the European Commission imposed additional tariffs on Chinese-manufactured EVs, including BYD, following an anti-subsidy investigation. The tariffs are in addition to the existing 10% import duty.
BYD-specific tariff: An additional 17.8% tariff was applied to BYD EVs (as of October 2024), making BYD’s combined import duty approximately 27.8%.
Impact on prices: BYD has absorbed some of this tariff rather than passing it entirely to consumers. However, prices in EU markets have increased relative to what they would have been without tariffs.
PHEV exemption argument: BYD has been selling more DM-i PHEV models in Europe partly because plug-in hybrids face lower tariff scrutiny than pure EVs. The Seal U DM-i is partly assembled differently in its supply chain.
Future developments: The tariff situation is subject to ongoing EU-China trade negotiations. Buyers should be aware that pricing may change. Check with your dealer for the most current pricing.
European Insurance: Key Markets
Germany (Deutschland)
Germany’s insurance market is competitive. BYD models are insurable through major insurers (Allianz, HUK-Coburg, AXA), though premiums may be higher than equivalent German brands due to lower claims data availability.
Recommended approach: Get 3–5 quotes before buying. Specialist EV insurers and Direktversicherer (direct insurers) often offer better rates for newer brands.
Netherlands (Nederland)
The Netherlands has strong EV adoption and a competitive insurance market. BYD models are generally insurable with major Dutch insurers. The large EV-aware market means better data and reasonable premiums.
Norway
Norway has the highest EV penetration in the world. BYD competes well here, and insurance for Chinese EVs is generally competitive due to market maturity.
France
French insurance for BYD models follows similar patterns to Germany. Comparison sites (LeLynx, Assurland) are recommended for finding competitive rates.
EU Charging Infrastructure
BYD’s CCS standard is compatible with all major European charging networks:
- Ionity: Ultra-rapid 350 kW network across European motorways
- Allego: Major Netherlands-based network covering much of Western Europe
- Fastned: High-power sites particularly strong in Netherlands, Germany, Belgium
- EnBW mobility+: Strong coverage in Germany
- Plugsurfing / Roaming: Multi-network access via single card in most EU countries
The BYD Seal and Sealion 7 at 150 kW peak DC can use Ionity and Fastned at their rated speeds.
Charging roaming: In Europe, the AFIR regulation requires major charging networks to accept bank card (debit/credit) payment at high-power DC chargers. You don’t need multiple network memberships for basic charging.
European Owner Experience: What’s Different from UK
- Language: Infotainment language settings allow European languages in most BYD EU-spec vehicles
- Speed limits: BYD navigation includes European speed limits database
- Charging: European market BYD models use CCS (same as UK) and Type 2 AC
- Warranty: Same 6-year vehicle / 8-year battery warranty applies across EU
Common EU Buyer Questions
Are BYD cars safe to buy in Europe given the tariff situation? The tariff increases the price but doesn’t affect the car’s safety or your warranty. BYD’s European warranty is backed by BYD Europe’s local entity. The risk is that tariffs could increase further, affecting resale values.
Are there local EU production plans? BYD has announced a manufacturing plant in Hungary (Szeged), expected to begin production in 2025–2026. Local production would reduce tariff exposure and could support better pricing and residuals over time.
What’s the best BYD for German motorway driving? The BYD Seal RWD (354-mile WLTP) or Sealion 7 RWD (323-mile WLTP) are best suited for Autobahn use. At sustained high speeds (130–150 km/h), real-world range is significantly lower than WLTP — plan charging stops every 150–180 km on motorways.
