BYD CarPlay & Android Auto Not Working: Complete Fix Guide

Apple CarPlay or Android Auto keeps disconnecting, won't connect at all, freezes, or connects with no sound on a BYD's rotating screen.

The Most Reported BYD Software Complaint

Unstable smartphone mirroring is consistently the #1 software complaint from BYD owners in Europe and Australia. The good news: BYD has shipped repeated improvements via updates since 2023 (early Atto 3s launched without CarPlay at all), and most remaining issues are fixable with the steps below.

Quick Checklist (Fixes ~70% of Cases)

  1. Update everything: car firmware (dealer or OTA), the phone’s OS, and — on Android — the Android Auto app.
  2. Use a high-quality data cable if wired: most “charging” cables don’t carry data reliably. Use the phone maker’s cable or a certified short (<1 m) cable. This alone resolves a huge share of disconnect complaints.
  3. Restart the infotainment: press and hold the screen power button for 5–10 seconds until the head unit reboots. Faster than restarting the whole car and safe to do while parked.
  4. Delete and re-pair: remove the car from the phone’s Bluetooth AND the phone from the car’s paired devices, then set up fresh. A stale pairing profile causes most “connects then instantly drops” behaviour.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto Dropouts

If wireless mirroring connects but drops randomly:

  • Turn off battery optimisation for Android Auto (Android: Settings → Apps → Android Auto → Battery → Unrestricted). Aggressive battery savers kill the connection mid-drive.
  • Keep Wi-Fi on — wireless mirroring runs over Wi-Fi Direct; if the phone auto-disables Wi-Fi (or a VPN interferes), the session dies. Disable “auto-switch to mobile data” style settings.
  • Forget other car Wi-Fi networks the phone keeps trying to join.
  • Interference: cheap USB chargers and dashcams broadcasting their own Wi-Fi hotspot in the cabin are known session-killers. Test with them unplugged.
  • If wireless remains unstable on your firmware version, wired is the reliable fallback — several BYD software versions have notably better wired stability.

Connects But No Sound

  1. In CarPlay/Android Auto, check the audio output route — start playback, then look at the car’s volume source (media vs phone vs navigation are separate channels on BYD; one may be at zero).
  2. Toggle Bluetooth off/on — on some versions, audio routes over Bluetooth while the projection runs over USB/Wi-Fi, and the BT half has silently disconnected.
  3. Reboot the head unit (hold screen power button).

Screen Freezes During Projection

  • Reboot the head unit first.
  • If it recurs with navigation running, clear the phone app’s cache (Google Maps/Waze are the usual triggers on older firmware).
  • Persistent freezing after the above → ask the dealer for the latest infotainment firmware; several 2024–2025 releases specifically addressed projection stability. Log it formally so it’s on record — see the warranty guide.

Rotating Screen Note (Atto 3 / Dolphin)

CarPlay and Android Auto only render in landscape on most BYD firmware. If your screen is rotated to portrait, projection may refuse to start or display incorrectly — rotate back to landscape before connecting. Newer firmware locks the screen in landscape automatically during projection.

Still Broken?

If none of this works, the fault is likely the head unit’s USB module or a firmware regression for your specific phone model:

  • Test with a different phone (borrow one) — this instantly tells you car vs phone
  • Report to the dealer with the phone model, OS version and car firmware version noted
  • Ask specifically whether a head unit firmware update or USB board replacement is available under warranty
