First: Is It Safe?
Yes — the infotainment screen is separate from the systems that drive the car. If the screen dies while driving, the car keeps driving normally (instrument cluster, lights, wipers all run independently). Pull over when convenient and reset it. Climate control is screen-dependent on most BYDs though, which is why a frozen screen feels urgent.
The Reset That Fixes Most Freezes
Hold the screen power button for 5–10 seconds (the physical button on/near the screen bezel, or the media power button on the console depending on model) until the display goes dark and the BYD logo reappears. This reboots the head unit only — takes ~30 seconds and doesn’t affect driving, settings or pairing.
On the rotating screens (Atto 3, Dolphin): if touch is dead but the screen is on, the reboot still works from the physical button.
If the button method doesn’t respond:
- Park, power the car fully off, lock it, and walk away for 10 minutes (the systems fully sleep)
- Unlock and start — the head unit cold-boots
If It Happens Repeatedly
Chronic freezing/lag is a firmware or storage problem, not a habit you should accept:
- Update the firmware. BYD’s 2024–2026 releases substantially improved head unit memory management — chronic-lag complaints on 2022–2023 cars usually trace to launch-era firmware that was never updated. Ask the dealer to bring all modules current, not just maps. See the software update guide.
- Clear app data/cache in the screen’s app settings for anything you sideloaded — third-party apps are a common lag source on older firmware.
- Note the trigger — freezes during CarPlay/Android Auto point to the projection stack instead: see CarPlay & Android Auto fixes.
- Check the car isn’t hot-soaked — screens parked face-up under summer sun can thermally throttle and lag until the cabin cools. A sunshade fixes more “slow screen” complaints than owners expect.
Black Screen That Won’t Come Back
If the screen stays black after the reset and a full lock-sleep cycle:
- Check whether audio/steering-wheel controls still respond (if yes: display failure; if no: head unit failure)
- A completely dead unit alongside other electrical weirdness may actually be a 12V battery problem — see BYD 12V battery drain
- Otherwise this is a warranty repair — screens and head units are covered by BYD’s 6-year vehicle warranty in most markets. Document with a photo/video, report it formally, and reference the warranty guide
What to Tell the Dealer
Freezes are intermittent, so arrive with evidence or risk “no fault found”:
- Video of the frozen/black screen (with the car visibly on)
- Date, time, what was running (nav, projection, music source)
- Your firmware version (Settings → About)
Ask explicitly: “Is there a newer head unit firmware than mine, and are there service bulletins for screen freezes on my model year?” In several markets there are.
